<p> The College of Professional Studies at Indiana Tech has expanded by opening a new campus in Northern Kentucky, its second location outside of Indiana. The university opened a campus in Louisville in October 2011.</p>

<p>The Northern Kentucky location is about 11,000 square feet and features eight classrooms, a library, a computer lab, a student lounge, and wireless connectivity throughout the facility. Classes are forming now with admissions representatives enrolling for online or on-ground courses.</p>

<p>“We’re looking forward to serving the Northern Kentucky community,” said Steve Herendeen, vice president of CPS. “Our programs are ideal for adults who want to improve their career prospects through education.”</p>

<p>A grand opening celebration for the new location will be scheduled for later in the summer.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The College of Professional Studies offers undergraduate and graduate programs in an accelerated format. The program is designed to accommodate nontraditional students who also have to balance work, family, and community responsibilities. Classes meet one evening per week for five weeks at the undergraduate level and six weeks at the graduate level. Online classes also span just five weeks or six weeks, but allow students to access materials and complete coursework anytime, anywhere they have broadband Internet access. Textbooks, which are included in the cost of tuition, are shipped to students prior to the start of each class.</p>

<p>Indiana Tech is a private university focused on career-oriented degree programs in high-demand fields such as accounting, business, criminal justice and leadership. The university’s main campus is in Fort Wayne, with satellite facilities in Elkhart, Fishers, Greenwood, Huntington, Indianapolis, Jeffersonville, Kendallville, Mishawaka, Munster, Plainfield, and Warsaw in Indiana as well as Louisville and Northern Kentucky.</p>

<p> A team of researchers from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will conduct groundbreaking tests on May 23-25 aimed at better understanding of the effects of earthquakes on building systems designed to suppress or prevent the spread of fires. The test are part of a major $  5 million study, supported by a coalition of government agencies and industry partners, seeking to learn what needs to be done to ensure that high-value buildings, such as hospitals and data centers, can remain operational in the aftermath of earthquakes.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The study, which is being conducted on the nation&#8217;s largest outdoor shake table at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center at the University of California, San Diego, has already subjected a full-scale, five-story building, equipped with a working elevator, sprinkler systems, an intensive care unit, a surgery suite, and computer servers, to series of simulated earthquakes, some registering as high as 7.9 on the Richter scale. During three weeks of seismic testing, engineers have monitored the building’s performance through more than 500 channels of data from a wide range of sensors.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The fire testing, which began during the seismic experiments with regular observations of the effects of the shaking on installed fire protection systems, is being led by Brian Meacham, associate professor of fire protection engineering at WPI. The overall goal is to gather data that will help engineers better model the fire performance of earthquake damaged buildings. “Knowing how fire protection systems might fail in an earthquake, and how the fire and smoke might spread, will allow us to design more resilient systems and provide better protection to people, property, and mission,” Meacham says.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>After each phase of the seismic tests, which included shaking with and without a base isolation system—large cylindrical rubber bearings that isolated the 80-foot-tall building from most of the lateral motion it would normally experience during a temblor—the WPI researchers entered the building to inspect passive fire protection components, including doors, ceiling systems, partition walls, and firestop materials, to see how they fared. If these systems are compromised in an earthquake, they could allow flames and smoke to spread and air to enter a room to feed a fire. They also inspected the condition of active fire suppression systems, particularly sprinklers.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Next week, the WPI team will conduct a series of fire tests on the building&#8217;s third floor. They will ignite pans of heptane, a liquid fuel that burns hot enough to simulate full burning within a compartment. Using temperature and smoke movement sensors, the researchers will assess how damage from the simulated earthquakes affect the ability of the active and passive fire protection systems to contain fires and prevent the spread of smoke. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Though post-earthquake fires are a well-known and serious hazard, very little is known about the performance of fire protection systems in earthquakes, Meacham says. The data gathered through this research could help inform more effective fire codes. In addition, this study will provide a unique opportunity to simultaneously observe the effects of shaking and fire on building systems, which could lead to new multi-hazard computer models that could help architects and engineers design safer buildings.</p>

<p>The seismic testing is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation, the California Seismic Safety Commission, the Charles Pankow Foundation, and a consortium of industry partners. The fire testing is supported by the California Seismic Safety Commission, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Hilti, ARUP, and several industry partners.</p>

Through its mission of promoting cultural integration, the Erasmus Program has already allowed over 2.5 million European students to study in a university of another European country. <p>The two winners of the competition will travel for 25 days around Europe aboard a QUBO Fiat car equiped with YATOO concept (camping gear turning cars into homes) and will be accompanied along the way by the Erasmus Student Network that will organize special welcoming events in the visited destinations. Participants must create a trip on Travellution and choose between two trip itineraries: either towards the north of Europe (Mythical North) or towards the south (Warm South). They must then invite 2 friends to join them and fulfill other requirements as described on the website http://www.erasmusdreamtrip.com. The winners of the trips will be the participants with the highest number of followers at the end of the competition. Two Nokia Lumia 800 smartphones will be provided by Nokia to the winners who will share their adventures with the public as they unfold through articles, tweets, photos and videos uploaded to dedicated blogs on Travellution.</p>
